Curiosities

Near the Castle of the village of Mértola was found the oldest direct evidence (with explicit date of year 482 AD), an epitaph with chandelier, which confirms the presence of Jews in the paleocristan community of Mértola. (image of the funerary tombstone of the Museum of Mértola).

With the Muslim domination, the Jewish community would have a higher prominence and social ascension in Al-Andalus.
